About

The Story Behind Terroir Specific Wines

In 2006, Johann Rupert initiated the search for all vineyards in South Africa older than 35 years. Traditionally the South African wine industry depended on tonnage, meaning that the meager yields of older vines dictated them to be removed. What was left was some pretty spectacular pockets of vines tended by people who either kept them out of sentiment or foresight. Old vine wine guaranteeing intensity, texture and a real sense of place. Preserving them then is an act of social responsibility toward South African wine and the people who invested in them despite the odds.

VINEYARDS

The vineyards selected for the Cape of Good Hope range represent exceptional vineyard sites and some of the oldest vines in the country, lovingly tended to produce only the finest reflection of their terroir. These vines are a reflection of a countrywide search that was to spark a worldwide old vine movement.

Altima

Elandskloof

Situated in the isolated Elandskloof Valley just north of Villiersdorp the wines produced here are a perfect representation of its cool climate terroir.

Skurfberg

Arbeidsend

Arbeidsend has been in the van Lill family for three generations. Traditionally rooibos tea and sheep farmers, Basie van Lill’s father decided to plant a few parcels of vines to diversify. These vineyards are also surrounded by fynbos.

Skurfberg

Krommevalley

Henk Laing’s farm, Trekpoort, is situated on a stretch of land between Lamberts Bay and Clanwilliam, on the Skurfberg Mountain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Laing has a deep understanding of this land, the vines, the weather, the animals and fynbos, having walked these soils during harvest with his father, decades ago.

Riebeeksrivier

Swartland

Set on the slopes of Kasteelberg in the Swartland, Riebeeksrivier’s vines planted from 1987, are situated in the perfect terroir for Rhône style varietals.

Parel Vallei Farmstead

Somerset-West

A small block of Merlot planted at high density in residential Somerset-West, deep clay soils and strict canopy management make for exceptional varietal character in the grapes.
