Parel Vallei Farmstead
Somerset West
A small block of Merlot, planted at high density in residential Somerset West.
Climate
The region’s climate is characterized by cold winters and mild summers. Rainfall peaks during the winter months of June to August but most years rain can be expected up to December. Strong winds occur from late spring and throughout summer which makes canopy management very challenging.
Aspect
The vineyards are planted 100m above sea level at the foothills of the Helderberg mountain and are 5km from the Atlantic ocean, as the crow flies. The cool sea breeze is an important factor for the climate of the area, especially during the ripening period, as cool temperatures are beneficial for the development of grape aromas and wine quality.
Vineyards
Deep clay soils that are made up from tiny particles that have good water retention properties. In extreme vintages, these soils tend to remain cooler which greatly benefits the vines. These soils also produce bold and muscular wines.
