A historical farm along the Riebeeksrivier road, on the slopes of Kasteelberg, overlooking the Swartland. Purchased in 2007 with the goal to produce top Rhône-style varietals.
Hot and dry with cooler nights and a substantial differentiation between day and night temperatures. Typically Mediterranean.
The vineyards are planted on eastern and southeastern slopes on the mountain, as well as some westerly facing slopes – providing a variety of microclimates within this terroirs.
The shale soils, similar to the soils of the Côte Rôtie in the northern Rhône and some sites in the Priorat area in Spain, express themselves strongly in the wine with unique varietal characteristics.
Planted to Syrah, Carignan, Chenin Blanc, Cinsaut, Durif, Grenache Noir, Marsanne, Mourvedre and Roussanne.
Delicate orange blossom oral notes overlay more distinctive creamy citrus peel on the nose.
Complex nose with apricot and nectarine brushed by a dusty gravel element and just a hint of floral perfume
Aromatics of Fynbos with herbaceous whiffs, extending to plum and dark fruit characteristics on the nose. Hints of lavender are evident too.
Appealing spicy dark fruit: black cherry with cedar and a hint of tobacco.
